Bianco Nero Tarot |
The Devil card in the Major Arcana, along with the Death card and the Tower card are three of the most feared cards in the tarot for those who do not understand what they represent. Even those who are new to the tarot, fear these cards until they understand what each represent. We will peek into the Tower & Death card in my next blog post.
Today's post, I am looking at addiction through the lens of the Devil card in the Major Arcana. The deck I am using for this post is the Bianco Nero deck (my all-time favorite go-to deck).
The Devil (Card number 15 in the Major Arcana) symbolizes the darker/shadow side of our psyche. As quoted by Isaac Cotec from herorise.com,
"The Shadow is the dark side of our personality, which we often repress and deny. It is the part of us that we are afraid to admit exists, and it can often be associated with negative qualities such as anger, jealousy, and greed."
The Devil is full of illusion. All that glitters is not gold. Whether your addiction is drugs, alcohol, work, sex, social media, etc., the Devil appeals to our primal nature, rooted in toxic attachments. These attachments may have seemed like the answer we needed at the time, but these habits and behaviors were cloaked in illusion.
By dancing with the Devil, one is on a path of losing one's individuality/identity, and if not facing the devil within, one will be lost down a path that often takes a long and dark turn. A path that is often hard to get off of but not impossible.
One simply cannot trick the Devil. There is always a price to pay. And if we are talking about extreme addiction, that price is one's life.
"Roots of addiction are primarily rooted in trauma. When taken a wider view, this is unprocessed emotion, physically stuck in the body...." - Tommy Rosen
But there is a way out...
The thing with the Devil card, there are two humans (male and female), bound in chains. These chains are loosely fit. Each of them can easily remove these chains and release themselves at any moment in time.
"Addiction is a separation from God/Source. A disconnection and separation of the Essence of Who We Truly Are" - Marianne Williamson
Once this false image of the Self is brought to Light, it is then we can set on a path of healing, expansion and growth.
Next week's blog post begins my series of the 12 Steps & the Tarot.
Peace, Love & Tarot,
